Good old Twitter

A large element of the BASIS Project is keeping your group sustainable for the future. One of the recent 'asks' from the groups is how to donate online.

We are grateful to Martyn Haynes @martynhaynes on Twitter, for contributing this really handy tutorial. I recently tweeted - 'what's the best way for non charitable organisations to add a donate button?' Here's the suggestion from Martyn.

You need to factor in that there is currently a 20pence 'handling fee' for non-charitable organisations, this is mentioned in the tutorial. Ultimately it shows you how to add a button on your website via PayPal.

Thought that it might be quite useful for a bit of a tutorial on here about how to sign up to the 1&1 affiliate programme

Go to the above link and then click on: '1&1 Customer ID'

adding your website domain in the box, will take you to:

choose the layout of the banner you like the look of (your unique ID will be added into the code) copy and paste your chosen piece of code

click anywhere on the code and this will let you copy it . . . to your website. Now you need to go to your website and in edit mode choose where you want to display the banner - the side bar is a good place.

Go to 'add new element' and when prompted choose - 'widget /HTML'

clicking on this will give you a place to paste your copied code:

looks like gobbledygook to be honest, but stick with it, and don't forget to press save.

Once saved; and in 'page mode' as opposed to 'edit mode', you will be able to view your banner a bit like this one:

When people click through to 1&1 from your website and purchase a web hosting package, you will get commission, currently at £30 for MyBusiness Site

Internet buttons is a free bit of IT gadgetry-kit, that enables you to send easy 'one-click' buttons - created by you, for a friend or relative that has a bad case of 'ISNT' *Internet Shyness Not Trying. Joking apart, they are a great idea for anyone who needs a bit of help & encouragement to get online

All you need to do is create a page of individual 'buttons' that link to web-sites of interest to the person you want to help . . .

Social Media Surgery
Definition:

"A social media surgery is a pretty informal gathering of people who want to learn how to use the web to communicate campaign or collaborate. They are deliberately relaxed. You will get to sit alongside someone who understands good ways to use the internet and they'll show you useful free tools. If you like what you see they can also help you set up your blog, or facebook page or twitter account. Most social media surgeries have an event every few weeks, so you can keep coming back for help."

The CVS BASIS Project recently held Telford & Wrekin's first Social Media Surgery. This national phenomenom; sweeping the country, was Nick Booth's concept. Nick from Podnosh, organised the first social media surgery for voluntary and community groups in Birmingham in October 2008. find him on twitter @podnosh

Finding a venue

We wanted a comfortable, local venue with good accessible wi-fi facilities - and chose the Holiday Inn Telford Then we needed to invite 'surgeons'/expert helpers (all donating their time for free); that I'd met off Twitter, and 'patients'/people from the voluntary sector wanting social media help, to the event.

"A surgeon is someone who knows enough about using social media tools to help someone else. Some surgeons have spent years understanding the internet, others started learning a few months ago but want to share what they know with other community groups and active citizens."

I acted as 'triage nurse' / general hostess and signposting folks to the right type of help. This mostly worked; but due to an amazing turnout of 'patients' and a couple of surgeons down on the night, there was a moment where people had to wait for a slot. With these events being 'non-appointment' I think that this may be inevitable.

For our first event we had 15 people asking for help, from a selection of groups:

Tots and Toddlers Daycare : Senior Citizens Forum : Girlguiding : Home-Start Telford & Wrekin : Ketley Parish Council along with some of our CVS staff - to mention a few.

Social Media Surgery

We are proud to announce as part of the CVS BASIS Project, we will be holding the first Social Media Surgery in Telford and Wrekin. This I.T. phenomenon has been sweeping the Country c/o podnosh Nick Booth to help non-for-profit groups and organisations get a handle on all things social media. Whether it be a chance to widen your reach using Twitter or encourage a discussion and share your group's passion via Facebook

The idea is for helpers; 'surgeons', to share their knowledge about social media to individuals wanting a bit of help 'patients', in a relaxed and informal setting; no presentation, no hard sell, just helpful advice at a level and pace you are happy with. It can pretty much take any format you like, but the emphasis is on informal.

Shropshire are already hosting their social media surgeries - hosted by Shropshire Infrastructure Partnerships

Twitter is a very useful social networking tool for your group or organisation - if used properly. Like most things social media related, it takes a bit of time to get to know it. Allow a bit of time to set up an account, FREE of CHARGE, and see what happens. Choose people in the same vacinity as you, same interests or business persuits and give it a go!

WHY IS IT SO USEFUL?

Well the CVS use Twitter to share about events taking place,
to ask for assistance with volunteers, broadcast what we do
and share what is happening in and around Telford & Wrekin's Voluntary and Community Groups.
Not only does this, network our area, it also raises 'Google's' awareness that we exist and in turn will help our visibility on the world-wide web.

The well known Grab-a-Grant sessions from Telford & Wrekin CVS, will be increasing in number throughout 2011. These funding advice sessions; run by members of the Development team, aim amongst other things, to give help support and advice about funding and sustainability, for local Telford & Wrekin groups and organisations.
